Declutter Your Jewelry Box

May 15th, 2021

Let’s face it — we all have clutter in our jewelry boxes: broken chains, gifts from old flames, out-of-style hand-me-downs, etc. Unlike most clutter, gold and gemstones have intrinsic value so tossing them in the trash is like throwing money away!

The good news is that the price of gold is near its all-time high. This makes NOW the best time to declutter your jewelry box!

Why You Should Declutter Your Jewelry Box

There are several benefits to decluttering. Here are a few reasons why you should take steps to declutter your jewelry box (and home) today.

  1. Keeping your jewelry in good condition and organizing all the documents associated with them will help increase its value. Examine your jewelry to see if any restoration can be done to increase its value and seek out a professional to restore your piece to quality condition.
  2. Creating a clean and stress-free environment for yourself can reduce anxiety.
  3. Easily find what you are looking for by getting organized.
  4. Let go of old sentiments.
  5. Turn your unwanted items into money.

How to Get Started

As you go through your jewelry box, examine each piece carefully. Based on what you think it’s worth and how sentimental you feel about it, get rid of everything you don’t need.

Here is a simple tip: If you haven’t worn it in the past year and/or you don’t have any sentimental attachment to it, it goes in the “no” pile.

Just imagine how good you will feel to be clutter-free! It can be hard to let go of jewelry because it holds so many memories. However, jewelry from exes might be a little easier to let go of. Regardless of the attachment, decluttering is great for clearing up spots for new pieces and starting fresh.

Turn the Old, New!

Most sentimental jewelry is harder to declutter. Even if we never wear it, we know it was special to the person who gave it to us. Inherited jewelry is even harder because there are often stories associated with it. Often, we feel guilty about decluttering these pieces.

Consider using the stones and/or gold to redesign and custom make something new that you will wear often to honor those memories. See if you can find other family members you can give the pieces of jewelry to. Maybe a daughter or niece celebrating a milestone.

You could also consider selling some jewelry if it is a nice piece in relatively good condition. If you feel guilty doing that, you can always donate the money you get to your loved one’s favorite charity in their memory.

If at the end of your decluttering process you find that you have too much jewelry, there’s a lot you can do with it. You can re-gift or repurpose non-valuable items. If you have something more valuable that has been collecting dust, consider getting it appraised. The amount could then be used as a possible tax credit if you decide to donate the item.

Selling your jewelry can create financial possibilities. You could have a small treasure you can sell for cash! Who doesn’t want more of that! Maybe you want to reinvest in on-trend pieces you’ll actually wear. Or put the money towards big purchases and expenditures. You could even clear out some unwanted debt!
